Wafula Chebukati, the former chairperson of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), passed away on February 20, 2025, at the age of 63. He died at Nairobi Hospital after a prolonged illness.
Chebukati was appointed as IEBC chairperson in January 2017 and served a full six-year term, retiring in January 2023. During his tenure, he oversaw the 2017 and 2022 general elections, both of which were marked by significant political controversy. His leadership faced challenges, including resignations of several commissioners and disputes over election results.
Following his retirement, Chebukati’s health declined. Reports indicate that he was diagnosed with brain cancer and had been battling diabetes and hypertension. He was admitted to Nairobi Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit shortly before his passing.
His death has elicited a range of reactions from political leaders and the public. President William Ruto described Chebukati as a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity.
The European Union’s ambassador to Kenya, Ms. Henriette Geiger, also expressed condolences, stating, “My condolences to the family of former IEBC Chair Chebukati over their most sensitive loss. May he rest in peace.”
As of now, the family has not decided whether to conduct a postmortem to determine the exact cause of death.
