Former DP Rigathi Gachagua Replying To KDF General Cherlse Kahariri

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has advised Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri to refrain from political involvement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the military’s apolitical stance. Gachagua expressed concerns that Kahariri’s recent comments on the “Ruto Must Go” chants might compromise the military’s reputation for neutrality.

The “Ruto Must Go” slogan, popularized through public demonstrations, reflects growing public sentiment ahead of the 2027 General Election. While citizens have the right to express their views, Gachagua cautioned that such expressions should remain within constitutional boundaries.

Gachagua further warned Kahariri against engaging in political matters, suggesting that doing so could tarnish his reputation and that of the military. He emphasized that the military’s primary role is to protect the nation from external threats, not to participate in political affairs.

In response, General Kahariri has reiterated the military’s commitment to defending the constitution and the democratically elected government, emphasizing that any calls for regime change should be pursued through constitutional means.

This exchange highlights the delicate balance between military neutrality and civilian political expression in Kenya, underscoring the importance of adhering to constitutional processes in political discourse.
