April 2025, Butere Girls High School’s drama production of “Echoes of War” has become the center of a legal dispute. Despite the school’s earlier achievements, including winning at the Butere Sub-County level and securing third place at the Western Regional Drama Festivals, “Echoes of War” was removed from the Western Regional winners’ gala. The drama club was subsequently directed to send its members home by Monday, effectively halting preparations for the National Drama Festival in Nakuru.
This action prompted legal intervention by Anifa Mango, a former student and passionate thespian from Kisii County. Mango’s petition argued that the principal’s decision violated the students’ rights to freedom of speech, expression, and fair administrative action. Advocate Kennedy Echesa, representing Mango, emphasized that there was no legal authority, including State House and the Ministry of Education, that could block the play after it had been approved by professional adjudicators at multiple competition levels.
On April 3, 2025, the High Court issued orders compelling Principal Omondi to recall the 50 students and facilitate their participation in the National Drama Festivals, scheduled to begin on April 7, 2025, in Nakuru County. Justice Fridah Okwany directed both the petitioner and Principal Omondi to appear before her for further directions.
This incident mirrors a similar event in 2013 when the school’s play, “Shackles of Doom,” was initially banned by the Ministry of Education due to its portrayal of societal issues. The ban was later lifted by the High Court, allowing the students to perform.
Butere Girls High School has a rich history of engaging in co-curricular activities, particularly in drama, where they have consistently showcased their talents at national levels. Their participation in “Echoes of War” further underscores the school’s commitment to nurturing artistic expression and addressing pertinent societal themes through performance.
