Japan’s Princess Gives Up Royal Status For Love

Princess Mako and Mr. Komuro have decided to take their relationship to the next level. The husband to be is not from any royal dynasty. He is just a simple man; ‘commoner.’

They first met at the International Christian University in Tokyo 2012, were engaged in 2017, and their wedding is set to take place later this month. It should have taken place back in 2018 but was delayed.

Under Japanese law, female imperial family members forfeit their status upon marriage to a ‘commoner’ although male members do not.
