Governor Andrew Mwadime, who assumed office in 2022 as an independent candidate after resigning from the Communist Party of Kenya, is currently serving his first term. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has validated this petition, which was supported by over 21,000 registered voters, and forwarded it to the Office of the President for further action.
Political Realignment
The region has witnessed a shift in political allegiance among its Members of Parliament (MPs). Four MPs, previously aligned with the Azimio La Umoja coalition, have pledged support to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration. This includes Taveta MP John Bwire, Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako, Mwatate MP Peter Mbogho Shake, and Voi MP Khamis Chome Abdi. Governor Mwadime has also expressed his commitment to work with the president, signaling a significant political realignment in the county.
Land and Resource Management
A longstanding issue in Taita Taveta is the governance of Tsavo National Park, which occupies a substantial portion of the county’s land. Residents and civil society organizations are advocating for the devolution of the park to the county government, arguing that it would allow for better management of resources, job creation, and resolution of land disputes. They also seek a more equitable share of the revenue generated by the park, which is currently not fully benefiting the local population.
Boundary Disputes
The county continues to grapple with boundary disputes, particularly with neighboring counties like Kwale and Makueni. These disputes have led to challenges in service delivery and revenue collection in towns such as Mtito Andei and Mackinnon Road. Despite previous agreements and court orders, the resolution of these disputes remains a contentious issue, with political leaders pledging to address them but facing significant hurdles.
