The Main Suspect Of The Death Of Albert Ojwang

Albert Omondi Ojwang, a 32-year-old teacher and influential social media commentator from Homa Bay County, tragically died in police custody on June 8, 2025, at Nairobi’s Central Police Station. His death has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice across Kenya.

Background

Ojwang gained prominence on X (formerly Twitter) for his outspoken commentary on social and political issues. On June 7, 2025, he was arrested by plainclothes officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) at his family home in Kakot village, Kabondo-Kasipul Constituency. The officers reportedly claimed he had insulted a senior official on social media. Ojwang was detained at Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Nairobi.

Circumstances of Death

The National Police Service stated that Ojwang sustained fatal head injuries after allegedly striking his head against a cell wall. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mbagathi Hospital. However, his family observed injuries inconsistent with this explanation, including a deformed head, blood oozing from his nose, and scratches suggestive of being dragged, raising suspicions of foul play.

Public Reaction and Official Response

The incident has prompted public outcry, with activists, political leaders, and civil society organizations demanding accountability. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is leading the investigation into the matter. In response, the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has interdicted five officers stationed at Central Police Station, including the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the Duty Officer, the Cell Sentry, and all officers on duty at the Report Office that night. Further action will be taken against any other officers found to have been involved.

Broader Implications

Ojwang’s death underscores ongoing concerns about police brutality and the suppression of dissent in Kenya. It highlights the risks faced by individuals who use social media platforms to express critical views, particularly in the context of heightened political tensions. The case has reignited debates about the need for comprehensive police reforms and the protection of free expression in the country.

As investigations continue, the public remains vigilant, demanding justice for Albert Omondi Ojwang and accountability for those responsible for his death.
